Denmark

The weeks in Inneringen ended, and I slowly moved further north. My next destination was Denmark. I wanted to visit parts of Germany as well, but my travel insurance only allowed me to stay a couple of weeks in Germany. So, I moved directly to Denmark. Before crossing the border, I took a big shopping tour in Flensburg to get all the necessary stuff because the northern countries are known for their expensive prices.

During my first week in Denmark, I found a beautiful parking spot on the east coast in the area of Hardensleben. It had everything needed to stay there for a couple of days. The parking spot was in a calm space directly on the coast, just a few meters from the ocean. There was a lot of space for vans, and they even had a toilet, which makes everything so easy as a vanlifer. I upgraded my dry toilet with a suction during my stay in Germany, so I can use it on the road without having any problems with moisture and smell. But as we all know, cleaning the toilet is not always the most fun thing you can imagine, so I preferred to stay at some parking spaces where I have access to toilets and just use my own when necessary. That worked pretty well so far. I spent about a week at the beach, taking my time to search for some volunteer and job opportunities, as well as figuring out what I want to do and experience on my next journey. It was a nice time, enjoying late evening walks on the beach or doing some sports in the area. It had everything in one place.

While I traveled in Portugal and Spain, I met some people from Denmark and Sweden. I planned to visit them during my time in the northern countries. So I reached out to Katherine, whom I met in Portugal. She invited me to her little cabin near Randers, where she lives with her boyfriend, Christopher. They are currently renovating the cabin to make it ready for the winter. That sounded like a nice project, so I joined her at the cabin. I was warmly welcomed by Katherine and Christopher, and they showed me around the area and the cabin. The cabin is really cute, enough for two people and their two dogs. In addition, they have a large garden to enjoy, while also taking care of six little ducks. It was a lovely place, but there was a lot to do to get it back into shape.

I helped them during my time with the renovation of the outside wall of the cabin. We ripped off the old wood panels and windows, fixed the rotten wood bars, insulated, and put a layer of wind barrier protection over it. After finishing these steps, we put back the windows and started covering the outside wall with tongue and groove planks (after painting them). That took longer than we thought. We had a couple of longer breaks or days with a lot of rain, where we didn’t want to work outside. The rapid weather changes in Denmark are something I first had to adapt to. Well, you can’t compare it with Spain and Portugal. In the end, we had a lot of fun together, shared some stories and insights, or went for a run together. After one and a half weeks, I left Katherine and Christopher to let them spend the rest of their time together on vacation. Thank you for welcoming me.

My next destination was the Nationalpark Mols Bjerge, where I discovered the beautiful landscapes of Denmark. I went for a 25 km hike around the national park. I got lucky with the weather and enjoyed a day without rain in the scenery of forests, hills, and the ocean. Now, I’m still exploring the area while searching for some new volunteer opportunities.
